Who was screened
128 women and 82 men, ages 21–80 (mean 52.6), were screened across the Greater Toronto Area, primarily in Toronto proper.
| Sex | n | % |
|---|---|---|
| Female | 128 | 61.0% |
| Male | 82 | 39.0% |
FibroScan results
Liver stiffness (kPa) estimates fibrosis; controlled attenuation parameter, "fat decay" (dB/m), estimates steatosis (fatty infiltration). Staging bands below follow commonly used VCTE cutoffs and are illustrative, not diagnostic thresholds set by a clinician.
Fibrosis staging (liver stiffness)
Steatosis staging (fat decay / CAP)
Body weight profile
Nearly 3 in 4 participants with recorded height and weight fell in the overweight or obese BMI range.
Reported health history
Self-reported comorbidities and prior liver testing, collected at intake.

Risk patterns
Average scan results were consistently worse among participants with type 2 diabetes, a known driver of fatty liver disease.
| Liver stiffness | Fat decay (CAP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Without Type 2 diabetes (n=181) | 5.50 kPa | 261.1 dB/m |
| With Type 2 diabetes (n=29) | 6.58 kPa | 276.4 dB/m |
| Mean BMI | |
|---|---|
| Liver stiffness <7 kPa | 28.6 |
| Liver stiffness ≥7 kPa | 32.5 |

Data quality notes
A few things worth knowing before drawing conclusions from this pilot data:
- City names, postal codes, and race categories have inconsistent capitalization and at least one apparent typo ("Pther Pacific Islander") in the raw export — cleaned here but worth fixing at the source.
- HbA1c, liver enzyme, and cholesterol lab fields are missing for roughly half of participants (54%, 62%, and 37% missing respectively), so summary stats for those were excluded from this report.
- 5 participants have no BMI recorded because height/weight were not captured at the visit.
- Fibrosis and steatosis staging bands used above are standard reference cutoffs, not a clinical read from the pilot's radiologists — treat them as descriptive, not diagnostic.
- One record (P-00021) has an incomplete exam — no BMI, weight, or probe data — suggesting the scan session was interrupted.
